‘Connected’ or ‘Wired-up’ communities may sound an alien concept to many at the moment, but with technology becoming ever more user friendly and increasingly a part of our everyday lives, this will soon be something everyone will be talking about on the housing estates of Lewisham.
The idea that computers can be used to regenerate housing estates can at first sound ridiculous if not slightly bizarre. But a group of residents known as Redbricks (Click HERE to view their site) in Manchester have done just that which has brought untold benefits to the community as a whole.
Since the introduction of their own unique ‘intranet’ - a website designed, updated and used by residents of the estate only, the area has under gone a community transformation. Each flat on the estate is ‘connected’ by a cable through their roof spaces to create their own network which can give them access to each other as well as the Internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All the residents pay is £3 a week and this allows them to look for jobs, find out what’s happening locally, email friends and neighbours and also shop on line should they wish.
‘Connecting’ the community in this way has improved communication, reduced crime as well as making the area a more desirable place to live.
This in turn has strengthened the community, broadened the skills of local residents and also given people greater access to information and the world wide web.
Following their achievements, Lewisham Council have teamed up with Redbricks to replicate this exciting initiative in the borough. We are now looking to getting communities on-line soon so that low income families, community groups, tenant and residents associations can all be a part of this unique project.
